Sophia Loren Coffee

Degree: Liberal Arts, Columbia School of the Arts, Chicago, Ill
Location: New York, NY

Bio:

In the heart of Harlem is where you will find Sophia Loren Coffee on the infamous 125th street.  She is known as the Earring Ambassador among other things. She is a jewelry designer, a singer, a song-writer, actress, and entertainment producer. She has toured the world as an actress and singer.

She is proud to say that she is from Chicago, and the south-side where she learned the good and the hard knocks of life.
She loves being an entrepreneur. She says she started being an entrepreneur while growing up on the south-side of Chicago. She says, “My mother worked; so my sister’s and I were latch key kid’s. I wanted to make money so I took the Kool-Aid my mother made every morning and would put it in these Dixie cups and freeze them. Well, now you remember, I told you my mother worked so she told us NOT to open the door. So what I did we do? We cut a slit in the screen door, just enough to pass people the ice cups and get the money in. “ “ I would scream “ ICE CUPS, ICE CUPS!” Then me and my sisters Lori and Cocoa started our first business”.

Current Project

Building bridges across the Atlantic!

I am fundraising and working with the Ghana Nkwanta Project to visit Ghana in the fall of 2013.   On this trip we will start an art cultural and rural agricultural development exchange project in the Nkwanta area and Techiman area of Ghana. We will be documenting and videotaping.

I will teach contemporary jewelry design workshops as an entrepreneur project which will generate income for the Adele women and for the farmers in Techiman.

Conduct workshops in spoken word poetry, creative writing/theatre, and African American singing styles (Gospel, Jazz, and Blues); in exchange we will learn some Ghana songs and dances.

Study Ghanaian traditional bead making and culture (visit bead markets, bead tours, and traditional bead making.

Study agricultural practices in the Nkwanta area and get certified in Permaculture Design from the Permaculture Network in Techiman.
